The Jacksonville Jaguars have been trying to make good of their time when it comes down to interviews for their general manager vacancy as they will have to wait until next Monday to interview executives working in the NFL. With that being the case, they’ve interviewed people like ESPN’s Louis Riddick, former Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith, and current interim Trent Baalke.
On Sunday morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport also revealed another name to add to the list — and that’s former New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese. Rapoport also added that others could also speak with him in the league as there are several other vacancies to fill.
Former Giants GM Jerry Reese has already interviewed with the Jaguars, according to sources informed of last week’s meeting, and Reese is a name to watch as at least five other teams go about their searches for GMs in the coming weeks.
Reese’s time in the NFL began in 1994 as he started things off with the Giants as a scout. He worked his way up the pecking order and was promoted to director of player personnel in 2002. After spending five years in the role, he succeeded general manager Ernie Accorsi in 2007 and held the role until 2017 when he was fired. Since that moment, he’s been out of the league though there was interest to return.
While serving as the team’s general manager, the Giants won two Super Bowl titles (XLII and XLVI) defeating the New England Patriots both times. While in New York, he was able to land notables like receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Hakeem Nicks, cornerback Prince Amukamara, and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. There were also some major misses like offensive tackle Ereck Flowers, cornerback Aaron Ross, and defensive tackle Marvin Austin to name a few.
The Jags’ general manager vacancy is thought to be the most attractive job offer available by many. They are projected to have $77.6 million in cap space, which would be the most of any team in 2021. They also will have 11 draft picks, one of which is the No. 1 overall pick for the time being. If they can hold on to it, they would be in the driver’s seat for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is expected to declare and is regarded as the top prospect to enter the draft since Andrew Luck.
