Gators’ Kyle Trask continuing to fall in Heisman race

The spearhead of the Gators’ dynamic offense, Kyle Trask, still has a chance at the Heisman Trophy, but his odds are growing slimmer.

It seems that, at least for now, the days of Kyle Trask as the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy have come to an end. While the Gators’ quarterback was riding high on the success of the program, oddsmakers loved him. Now that they have fallen on harder times, the love isn’t quite as forthcoming.

Trask was surpassed last week by Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, who had a monster week helming a monster Roll Tide offense. The national media has also spent the last two weeks falling in love with DeVonta Smith, who will end his career with Alabama as one of the most productive wide receivers in the history of the NCAA.

The in-house ESPN voters again ranked the top Heisman candidates this week, and as it shook out, Trask fell to third on the list.

3. Kyle Trask, QB, Florida

Notable: Saturday was a mixed bag for Trask — he threw for 474 yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions — and the Gators were stunned by LSU. Still, his body of work over the course of the season keeps him in the hunt.

Quotable: “Trask had his worst game of the season against a completely depleted defense. That’s a dagger.” — David Hale

Yep, Dave is right. That game, that awful game which, although it’s less than a week old, we’re already sick of talking about it, it was the dagger. Sports awards have always had just as much to do with the storyline as they have statistics. Thus it only makes sense that Trask would abruptly lose his head of steam in the Heisman chase when the bottom fell out of Florida’s playoff chase.

The Gators’ next game, facing off against Alabama on Saturday, means Trask will be taking on the very roster including both players who have cut him in line for the Trophy. It will be an immensely weighty game from a storyline perspective and it could very well be the deciding factor in whether Trask’s Heisman campaign is truly dead.
