Florida Gators men’s basketball star forward Keyontae Johnson‘s health continues to improve after a horrifying collapse on the court against the Florida State Seminoles last Saturday that resulted in a medically-induced coma. Five days later, the outlook is looking far brighter than earlier this week.

The university provided the following press release via its official Twitter account on Thursday Afternoon.

Keyontae Johnson continues to show truly encouraging signs of progress as he undergoes tests and further evaluation at UF Health,” athletic director Scott Stricklin said. “He and his family have again expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers and well-wishes.”

Florida’s non-conference men’s basketball games scheduled in the next week will be postponed, including Dec. 19 vs. Florida Atlantic, Dec. 20 vs. Florida A&M and Dec. 22 vs. James Madison.

“This has been an emotionally taxing time for Keyontae’s family, friends and teammates,” Stricklin said. “Our hope is that everyone impacted will take an opportunity to process those emotions and regroup ahead of the start of the new year.”

The postponement of those non-conference games does not come as a surprise despite Johnson’s steady recovery. While it is possible those games simply will not be played this season — like Florida’s erstwhile matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners at the start of the month — the language used suggests that the team will attempt to reschedule some time in early 2021.

In the meantime, the good news is that Florida’s stud basketball player is making significant progress in his recovery and that his school and teammates are behind him every step of the way toward a full bounce-back from this terrible incident.
