Urban Meyer troubled by Michigan trajectory: ‘They’re in trouble’

The former Ohio State coach sees the same issues in Michigan football as most of us do.

When you’re doing well, hearing former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer sing your praises at Michigan is a wonderful thing. But when you struggle and lose two weeks in a row? It’s another thing entirely.

As an analyst for FOX Sports and Big Ten Network, Meyer has broken down all of the conference, but came away most impressed by the Wolverines after Week 1. However, after suffering their second-straight loss in two weeks, the former Buckeyes head man has the same concerns as the maize and blue faithful.

And it starts with the secondary in Ann Arbor.

“I’m legitimately worried after watching it again this week,” Meyer said on Big Ten Network Monday night. “Their pass defense is very porous. They’re not in a position to make plays down the field. You saw Michigan State – who couldn’t score a touchdown against Iowa the following week – throwing all over the Wolverines. And then, this past week, I’m sitting there like probably most of the country in awe of what Indiana was doing. They were getting behind the defensive backs, and the defensive backs, at times were there, but they’re not playing the ball. What does that mean down the road? They’re in trouble.

“Whether it’s talent – I can’t imagine it’s that much of a drop-off, that significant. It has to be fundamentals. You have to play the football. And when you see Indiana, Michigan State light them up, throwing the ball over 300 yards in each game, that’s very alarming.”
