Matt Nagy won’t be afraid to tell Bears QBs if they’re ‘playing like crap’

Bears HC Matt Nagy won’t hesitate to call out Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles if they’re playing poorly during training camp practices.

Matt Nagy feels the sense of urgency when it comes to his offense getting on track after being one of the worst units in the NFL last season. And that starts at the quarterback position.

The Chicago Bears traded for quarterback Nick Foles to challenge incumbent starter Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job, although no one could’ve predicted how this QB battle was going to play out up until this point.

With an entirely virtual offseason and no preseason games, Nagy will have only training camp reps to decide his starter in Week 1. But he won’t hesitate to call out Trubisky or Foles if they’re playing poorly during training camp practices, and ultimately, neither quarterback should be shocked by whomever the Bears pick to start in Week 1.

“If one of the quarterbacks is stinking it up and he’s playing like crap, we’re going to tell you, ‘You’re playing like crap,’” Nagy told reporters Wednesday. “And we’re going to tell you that in front of the other one. They’re both going to know when someone’s playing good and someone’s playing good or someone’s playing bad and someone’s playing bad. They’re going to know that. So when the time comes when we inevitably need to make a decision, trust me it’s not going to be a surprise to them.”

If you read between the lines, it feels like the same message during the regular season. Whoever wins the starting quarterback job will surely be on a short leash. If the eventual starter begins struggling immensely, it wouldn’t a surprise to see the other. Which certainly wouldn’t bode well for the Bears in 2020.
