The Cincinnati Bengals hit 2020 training camp with a relatively understood cap space situation now that both Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins have either agreed to deals or already signed them.
With Burrow’s 2020 hit in the books ($6.58 million) and Higgins done as well ($1.579 million), the Bengals officially have about $15.874 million in free space.
That’s more than enough wiggle room to work on say, an extension for Joe Mixon if the Bengals want to go that route. And they’ve said they do, especially with A.J. Green predictably not getting an extension and playing this year on the franchise tag.
But there is one big hiccup to the outlook — the salary cap in 2021 could be reduced compared to this season as the NFL looks to recoup some of the revenue losses from minimal attendance.
Should the Bengals want to hold on to as much space as possible just in case, it might be all quiet on the extension front for the rest of the summer. An extension right now for a guy like Mixon wouldn’t normally eat into too much cap on this year’s outlook anyway, but teams will certainly have an eye on things given the circumstances.
For now, the Bengals have plenty of free space entering camp, even after paying the No. 1 pick in the draft.
