The Denver Broncos will not give safety Justin Simmons a long-term contract extension, at least not this year. Simmons will play the 2020 season on his franchise tag after the deadline for an extension passed on Wednesday.
Here’s a sampling of how Twitter reacted to the news.

There is a very realistic possibility the 2021 Broncos will not have Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson, Von Miller, A.J Bouye, Jurrell Casey, Shelby Harris, and Todd Davis

Justin Simmons is an example of a player doing *literally* everything right.
Earned snaps on a legendary defense as a rookie. Cut his teeth on special teams. Became a starter. Became an All-Pro. Walter Payton MOY nominee.
It's an embarrassment the @Broncos don't have a deal.

I appreciate John Elway sticking to his guns on contract negotiations.
However…. there are players you pony up, man up to give them the deals to ensure they stay here.
Justin Simmons is exactly the guy you give a raise and then some.

Gut feeling says Justin Simmons is gone after this year.
If Elway is hesitant to give Simmons the bag now, what if Justin proves himself and has another good year…are we really going to expect Elway to pay up with the salary cap going down cause of the pandemic? Hope I'm wrong https://t.co/GgDic9UQ6j

They can just tag him again next year at worse, but I hope he gets paid long term.

Broncos rookies will report for camp next week and veterans will report in two weeks. Fans will not be permitted to attend practices this summer.
