Former New England Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon is applying for reinstatement after being suspended for the fifth time from the NFL for substance abuse issues.
He was suspended indefinitely on Dec. 16 — a month after losing his older brother. Gordon’s brother passed away on Nov. 11 and it triggered his relapse, according to Gordon’s attorney, Adam Kenner.
“Josh had a lapse because of his brother’s death. That set him back,” Kenner said. “But since that time he has realized how important it is for him to take the right steps, do what’s proper, and understand how to manage these issues. He’s installed the right team around him to make sure he’s on the right path. He understands he’s been given every chance. He looks forward to making the most of this.”
Josh Gordon’s brother passed away last November, about a month before his suspension — Gordon’s fifth for violating the NFL-NFLPA drug policies.

Gordon, 29, would become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career if he were to be reinstated. He’s currently without a team after spending one season with the Seattle Seahawks.
He still is in extremely good shape and capable of making contributions on the field — but, his history of substance abuse still remains a factor.
