As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.
Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.
Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.
Next up on the list is redshirt freshman defensive lineman Ishmael Sopsher out of Amite (La.).
Ishmael Sopsher, Defensive Line
Height: 6-3 / Weight: 334
Class: Redshirt Freshman
Hometown: Amite (La.)
High School: Amite High School
HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 47 overall / No. 5 DT / No. 3 LA
HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 72 overall / No. 3 DT / No. 5 LA
Analysis: Ishmael Sopsher was the highest-rated defensive line commitment for Alabama in the 2019 recruiting class, but he actually earned the least amount of playing time of the group during his freshman season.
That doesn’t mean that Sopsher should be counted out, however. With his conditioning and overall development expected to improve with an entire offseason under his belt, the hope is that the Louisiana native can continue to take steps towards becoming a dominate presence.
The ceiling is extremely high for the 6-foot-4, 334-pound nose tackle, as long as he continues to move in the right direction. He’s powerful and moves well for a player his size, and that should help him in his quest of earning more playing time.
The arrival of freshman five-star Tim Smith, as well as four stars Jah-Marien Latham and Jamil Burroughs, in the 2020 class makes the defensive line rotation all the deeper, but Sopsher will still have a chance to work his way up the depth chart — eventually.
