UT first played on the date to kickoff the 1996 season, defeating UNLV, 62-3, at Neyland Stadium.
The Vols were victorious over Wyoming, 47-7, in a contest played at the now Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
Tennessee opened its season on August 31 in three consecutive years from 2012-14.
UT defeated North Carolina State, 35-21, in the 2012 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. In 2013, the Vols beat Austin Peay, 45-0, and were victorious over Utah State, 38-7, in contests played at Neyland Stadium.
Georgia State upset Tennessee, 38-30, to open the 2019 season in Knoxville.
