2022 S Myles Rowser re-opens recruitment (story with update)

The Wolverines lost one of its two members of the 2022 class, but one person told WolverinesWire there’s a reason to still think he returns.

We’re a little late to this, but Michigan got some not so good news in the 2022 class, with four-star safety Myles Rowser backing off of his firm commitment from the Wolverines.

The younger brother of current Michigan cornerback Andre Seldon Jr., Rowser was the second verbal commit of the 2022 class, as well as another legacy like Alex VanSumeren — the younger brother of linebacker Ben and the first to commit in Dec. 2019.

However, as first reported by Rivals.com’s Ohio State and Rutgers recruiting reporter, the recent transfer from Belleville (MI) to Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy has chosen to re-open his recruitment, thus backing off from his verbal commitment to play football in Ann Arbor.

Rowser spoke to Rivals recruiting guru Josh Helmholdt to explain his decision yesterday.

Questions about Michigan class of 2022 commit Myles Rowser and his recruiting status started to arise Thursday night, so the four-star defensive back clarified exactly where things stand.

“I have fully opened my recruitment, but I am still very interested in Michigan,” Rowser explained. “Nothing really changed. I still love the coaches there, I love how they run the defense. My brother is at Michigan now, so he can tell me more stuff about Michigan and it just boosted my interest.”

As noted, Michigan is still firmly in the chase, it just can’t count at the moment on him ending up in the class.

While that’s usually the death knell in recruiting, it’s not unheard of a prospect to back off his commitment and eventually end up back in the class. It happened years ago with William Campbell of Detroit (MI) Cass Tech fame. And it happened this past recruiting cycle with 2020 Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy safety Lejond Cavazos, who decommitted from Ohio State before rejoining the class months later.

We spoke to one person close to the situation who requested anonymity who shared Michigan’s chances at still securing Rowser’s commitment once again.

“Definitely — it’s a great chance he does (re-commit to Michigan),” that person told WolverinesWire. “But he’s a 15-year old kid that just wants to explore and make sure he makes the right decision for him and no one else.”

Rowser currently has a reported 20 offers, including the likes of Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Nebraska and Penn State.

Now that he’s ranked as a four-star and getting more attention at IMG Academy, it makes sense that he takes his time to make sure he makes the right choice. Naturally, as a more visible player than he was at the time of his Jan. 2020 commitment, he’ll have to make sure that wherever he ends up, it’s the right place for him.

Michigan sits in a good spot. He’s visited many times and has a brother already on campus as an early-enrollee. Now it’ll be up to him to see if there’s somewhere else that’s a better fit, or if he was right the first time around.
