Report: Giants spent ‘significant time’ meeting with Tristan Wirfs

The New York Giants have reportedly spent “significant time” meeting with Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs.

The New York Giants are in obvious need of an offensive tackle as they head into the 2020 NFL Draft, so it comes as little surprise that they’ve met with all four of the top prospects at the position and then even a few in the second tier.

However, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Giants have held a particular interest in Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, with whom they have spent “significant time.”

Of course, all meetings have been held in a non-traditional sense, either via teleconference, Skype or Zoom. In-person meetings have been shut down as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving all interactions to occur virtually.

Despite that change, the Giants appear dead-set on gathering all the information they can on the top offensive tackle prospects and the connection to Wirfs certainly has gained some steam in recent days.

As far as fit, Wirfs likely projects more as a right tackle than a left tackle, where the Giants currently have veteran Nate Solder.

Here’s a quick breakdown on Wirfs from Draft Wire:

Wirfs has all of the tools to be a high-end starting offensive lineman for years to come. From his brute strength to his impressive athleticism to his nonstop motor once engaged with a defender, his skill set has much to be excited about. Regardless of whether teams plan on playing him at tackle or guard, he should be an early pick in this year’s class.

Whether the Giants stay put at No. 4 overall or trade down, do not be surprised to see Wirf’s name called whenever they are put on the clock.
