The great debate surrounding the Miami Dolphins and their search for a new franchise quarterback has been centered around what the team needs to do to ensure they get their man. Miami, picking 5th in this year’s NFL Draft, knew coming into the season that their team would not be competing for a championship and instead were jostling for positioning to pluck a quarterback to move forward with. That effort, as well as the season, was a success. Miami stockpiled three 1st-round draft selections and finished the year 5-11 (but 5-4 in their final nine games) to secure to the 5th pick.
With the Cincinnati Bengals looming as the clear and obvious first team to take a quarterback, Miami is currently the assumed second destination for a quarterback. That is, of course, unless trades throw the process for a loop. But former NFL general manager Mark Dominik seems to think the Dolphins are just fine where they are. Dominik took part in conference call yesterday and suggested that the Dolphins should be fine to stand firm on the 5th overall pick and get their choice of Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

Such a strategy falls in line with the Dolphins’ apparent line of thinking in free agency. The team was not afraid to go big and swing hard on CB Byron Jones but otherwise stayed vigilant with their spending to ensure they could secure a high volume of new talents. Miami trading to jump into the top three picks would certainly involve a loss in draft capital — staying put with the No. 5 pick has obvious appeal in that regard. And the Dolphins have the advantage of overwhelming amounts of capital at their disposal, too. The team can be quick to squash any potential dealings with other teams that look to jump the Dolphins and interrupt their draft plans by bullying them in negotiations.
Which only leaves one question: who exactly will the Dolphins pick? Dominik seems to think they’re destined for Tua. We only need to wait a week longer to find out.
