A curious thought

In his first few seasons, McDermott’s built a defensive unit that’s likely to trend in the right direction throughout his next extension. Young pieces like Tre’Davious White and Matt Milano need new contracts pretty soon, but that foundation is set. Hopefully both stay, but even if one does, or another piece walks around the door via free agency, building a defense isn’t the same as building an offense. This defense would still be a formidable unit and McDermott’s system would still be in place.

Does a quarterback need help? Yes. This is why the Bills built around Josh Allen over the last two offseasons, which included the cherry on top in Stefon Diggs in recent months. Allen has all the tools in place to be a successful QB in 2020. And this isn’t to say he’s not going to be one, or he’s going to be a bust, but how much did McDermott’s lifeline truly get extended here?

If Beane is kept around for the same amount of time, do these guys get another crack at finding a quarterback?

It’s a very rare thing a front office gets a chance to do, and it’s not to say that this pair would ever even gets that chance for sure, but now it’s at least a… maybe? Could McDermott & Beane get another shot at finding a franchise quarterback?

If the defense continues to churn out success and the offense lags and signs point to Allen as the issue? Just maybe… but let’s hope we don’t need to find out this answer.
