Tennessee will kick off its 2023 football season in 32 days.
Jersey No. 32 is retired by Tennessee in honor of Bill Nowling. Nowling played fullback for the Vols from 1940-42.
He was a three-year starter under head coaches Robert Neyland and John Barnhill. Tennessee won a national championship in 1940.
Nowling and former Tennessee football players Rudy Klarer, Willis Tucker and Clyde Fuson lost their lives fighting for the United States in World War II. Their jersey numbers were retired by Tennessee in 2006.
The Vols will kick off its 2023 season Sept. 2 versus Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for noon EDT and ABC will televise the contest.
Tennessee’s home schedule has contests against Austin Peay, UTSA, South Carolina, Texas A&M, UConn, Georgia and Vanderbilt.
The Vols’ road schedule features games at Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and Missouri.
The 2023 season will be Tennessee’s third under head coach Josh Heupel.
