One of the lone bright spots for Texas football last season was true freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
The former Michigan pledge was the one player that Sarkisian recruited on the roster after he accepted the head coaching job at Texas. While many expected Worthy to receive significant playing time regardless, the speedster was thrust into a starting role early on due to injuries at the position.
Worthy concluded the 2021 season with 63 catches for 998 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 15.8 yards per catch. He broke numerous freshman receiving records at Texas and was essentially unstoppable on the field.
Nick Kosko of 247Sports recently ranked the top 10 returning wide receivers in college football for the 2022 season, and Worthy landed at No. 3. Only Pitt’s Jordan Addison and Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba were ranked ahead of him.
As a freshman, Worthy went off in what was a down year for the Longhorns. He’s only going to get better. Now that Quinn Ewers is expected to be under center for Texas, Worthy might be an absolute monster. He easily could be in the running for the top receiver spot in the country. It’s amazing he still has to play another season after 2022 before going to the NFL.
As a member of the Class of 2021, Worthy was a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite. He was the No. 4 overall prospect in California, the No. 8 wide receiver prospect in the class and the No. 62 overall prospect in the class. – Nick Kosko
Texas will need another monster season out of Worthy in order to compete for the Big 12 title in Sarkisian’s second year with the program.
