The UNC basketball program has been in the national spotlight for much of the last five decades and that makes it easy for up-and-coming recruits to grow up watching a lot of the Tar Heels.
For 2024 four-star wing [autotag]Drake Powell[/autotag], his interest in UNC growing up was very high, and still is.
According to On3.com, the 6-foot-5 guard called UNC his ‘dream school’ when he was growing up and the Tar Heels have already started to reach out.
“Growing up, North Carolina was a dream school for me because I went to a lot of their games,” Powell said. “But as I got into this recruiting process, my dream turned into playing basketball in college. It would be cool if they offered, but I am open and listening to every school.”
Powell averaged 16.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.6 steals per game for Pittsboro (NC) Northwood High last season.
So far, he holds offers from Miami, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, LSU, Tennessee, USF and Wake Forest.
Powell has already taken multiple unofficial visits to UNC throughout the last few months.
His father Dedric Powell played baseball at North Carolina in the late 1980s.
While a North Carolina offer hasn’t come yet, it is worth monitoring.
Powell is ranked No. 76 in the 247Sports 2024 rankings.
