Ray Cooper III makes million-dollar comeback at PFL Championship

Seemingly moments away from a second straight disappointing finals finish. Ray Cooper III rallied for a spectacular win and a $1M check.

NEW YORK — For a minute there, [autotag]Ray Cooper III[/autotag] looked like he was in for another disappointing result at the PFL Championship.

The Hawaiian welterweight lost in the championship round to Magomed Magomedkeriov last New Year’s Eve, but worked his way back through the 2019 season to earn another crack at $1 million, giving him the distinction of becoming the first PFL runner-up to get a second crack at the big prize.

The Big Apple loves stories of those who are knocked down and get right back up to try it again, and Cooper rose to the the moment under the bight lights of the biggest city Tuesday night at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

In a short-but-wild fight, Cooper was nearly finished by David Michaud. But when it appeared he was set for another heartbreak and long, regretful flight back to Hawaii, Cooper managed to regain his wits and rally for a thrilling TKO victory at the 2:56 mark of the opening round, thus ensuring he’ll return to the islands with an oversized check for $1 million (yes, “actually” guy about to go to the comment section, we know taxes mean he’s not really going to be a millionaire. Settle down).

After the fight, the newly enriched Cooper said Michaud brought exactly what he thought his opponent would bring to the table.

“We did what we said we were going to do, lay it all on the line and try to knock each other out,” Cooper said. “That’s the name of the game, much respect to David.”

UGA Wire reveals its No. 2 Georgia football win of the decade

In honor of the start of 2020 Wednesday, we decided to put together a list of the Top 10 Georgia football wins from the past decade.

After all of the suspense in the last 8 games we revealed, you probably know what the final two are by now, but we will only currently reveal the second, just for fun.

Coming in at No. 2 on our list is the 2013 LSU game in Athens, with Aaron Murray, Justin Scott-Wesley and Michael Bennett leading the Dawgs to a come-from-behind 44-41 victory, in one of the best games you will ever see.

College Gameday came to town for this heavyweight clash, after Georgia’s massive win over South Carolina just a few weeks before. CBS broadcast the game in its traditional 3:30 pm afternoon slot and the Bulldog defense stood its ground, with the infamous theme music blasting into the postgame highlights on a perfect evening in Athens.

You might remember the ‘Letter to Larry’ that Georgia football broadcasting legend Loran Smith wrote for Larry Munson after this game. And you probably won’t forget former coach Mark Richt tearing up with Tracy Wolfson in his postgame interview.

Here are some highlights from that win of all wins in Athens:

My cup runneth over!

UGA Wire reveals it’s No. 3 Georgia football win of the decade

In honor of the start of 2020 Wednesday, we decided to put together a list of the Top 10 Georgia football wins from the past decade.

We have finally made it into our Top 3 and boy, do we have a treat for you. Up next in our countdown list is the 2017 SEC Championship win over Auburn, to unofficially christen Mercedes-Benz Stadium

D’Andre Swift and the Dawgs ran all over the Tigers in their 2017 rematch game, to advance to the school’s first ever College Football Playoff. If not for this awesome win over our little brother to the West, the Rose Bowl Game would not have happened.

Nothing truly made this one an instant classic game, but it definitely deserves a spot in the Top 3 for its significance and feel-good vibes.

The freshman running it back to Philadelphia on the Barn will never get old.

Oops, I called it the Barn again. Hope I didn’t offend a Barner…

Oh, little brother…

Watch: Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, proud of Ryan Day

Ryan Day sat with Urban Meyer and the BTN crew after the loss in the Fiesta Bowl. Meyer showed a lot of pride with his comments.

The days are slowly ticking by on a loss that will forever haunt an Ohio State team that had the goods to win it all in 2019. The Buckeyes outplayed defensing national champion Clemson for large portions of the Fiesta Bowl Saturday night, but couldn’t seem to catch a break — ultimately falling when Justin Fields’ pass in the end zone was picked off with 37 seconds left on the clock.

There’s no doubt the loss still stings for new head coach Ryan Day, and it’ll take some significant time to get over it. Still, he handled himself with class afterwards and now it’s time to focus on recruiting and working on next year’s run towards big things.

There’s one guy in Day’s corner though at all times, and it’s former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Day sat down with the crew of the Big Ten Network after the game Saturday to dissect a little of what we saw Saturday night, and Meyer sat to his left.

If was a rather far-reaching interview, but at the end Meyer consoles Day and swells with pride on what he and the team did this year.

“I know I’m working at BTN right now, but I’m proud of you, brother,” said Meyer. “And I’m proud of Ohio State football, the way they played, the way they scrapped. And that was a hell of a team, hell of a year and you come back, have a great team coming back, and the future’s bright. Recruiting is strong at Ohio State. You’ve got a great head football coach and his staff.”

Those are really strong, personal and attention grabbing words from Urban Meyer. You can watch the entire interview thanks to the video shared by the Twitter feed of BTN.

UGA Wire reveals it’s No. 4 Georgia football win of the decade

In honor of the start of 2020 Wednesday, we decided to put together a list of the Top 10 Georgia football wins from the past decade.

Folks, the moment you all have been waiting for. We have reached the Final Four.

Let’s get to it. Coming in at No. 4 on our list is the 2012 Georgia-Florida game, which will always be a fan favorite. Everyone remembers exactly where they were and who they were with when Jarvis Jones punched the ball out from Jordan Reed at the goal-line in Jacksonville, after a huge Malcolm Mitchell touchdown earlier in the game.

The hated Gators were about to score late in the game to try and tie things up at what was then Everbank Field, but Jones’ forced fumble helped to preserve a 17-9 Bulldog win on the St. John’s River.

A few weeks later, the Dawgs would clinch their second-straight trip to Atlanta, to play in an unofficial semifinal game for the BCS National Championship. And… that’s all we’ll say on that. We don’t need to go into detail.

Take a look:

He’s a badddddddd man!

GAME NOTES

Mountain West play resumes for both teams in the New Year as the Broncos look to keep the celebration going into Wednesday night in Boise.

Leon Rice’s team has won three games in a row after losing to Georgia Tech in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii last week. After dropping their game to the Yellow Jackets, Boise State responded with strong showings against Portland, UTEP, and Cal State Northridge.

One reason for their recent success is the debut of Abu Kigab, who transferred to Boise State after starting his career at Oregon. The junior was hled out of competition during the fall semester, but Kigab didn’t take long to make a big impact. He scored 33 points against CSUN in the team’s latest game. The outburst was especially encouraging for a team that was in need of a bit of size and scoring punch.

Boise State is in a good groove as conference play gets back underway, but their opponents haven’t had such a leisurely stroll over the past few games.

Wyoming has fallen to 5-9 and will almost assuredly spend the season fighting with San Jose State for 10th place in the Mountain West. The Cowboys have won two straight, although one of those wins came against Nebraska Wesleyan of Division III. Before a December 21 win over Denver, Wyoming had lost six in a row.

Their overtime victory against the Pioneers may have snapped the streak, but the Cowboys still look they are playing at a different level than the rest of their Mountain West peers.

And not in a good way.

This game could help solidify both the Broncos’ place in the top half of the league and Wyoming’s place in the cellar.

GAME PLAN

On THE BRONCOS’ POSSESSIONS…

The Broncos can attack teams in a number of ways, but they are at their best when they are raining threes down on their opponents. They’ve mostly thawed out of a cold spell that plagued that at the start of the season, and Justinian Jessup is always a threat to get hot from outside. Derrick Alston is the team’s primary scorer, though, and is good as anyone in the league at getting points from all over the court.

Boise State – and Jessup, in particular – takes very good care of the ball, and it is one of the reasons that Leon Rice has stuck with Marcus Dickinson in his backcourt, despite the senior’s limitations as a scorer.

In the frontcourt, RJ Williams has delivered an asbolutely fantastic performance on the season. Though he is relatively undersized at 6’7”, the senior has been one of the best rebounders in the country and has turned heads with his never-ending motor on the offensive end.

The Cowboys have certainly been better on the defensive end than they have been on offense, but that is a low bar to clear. Their best trait on defense has been their rebounding, but the Broncos should still be able to grab a few off the glass for some easy put-backs. And with Wyoming forcing turnovers at one of the lowest rates in America, expect Boise State to have plenty of opportunities to score against this pedestrian defense.

ON THE COWBOYS’ POSSESSIONS…

Well, it’s a pretty simple formula for Allen Edwards’ club: give the ball to Hunter Maldonado and let him work. And run out a lot of clock in the meantime. The Cowboys play one of the slowest tempos in the country, clocking in just outside of the bottom 10 nationally in possessions per game.

For his part, Maldonado has had no shortage of opportunities to advertise his offensive skills, racking up usage rates well over 30%. The offense moves – slowly – through the sophomore. Hunter Thompson and Jake Hendricks are the only other Wyoming players to have taken more than 100 shots on the year.

But while this dearth of shots can be mostly explained away by the slow pace and the Maldonado-centric offense, Wyoming has cost themselves a number of opportunities – and they almost never get second chances.

The Cowboys are slightly below average in terms of ball security, but the Broncos aren’t particularly opportunistic, so that won’t be as much of a liability as the team’s abysmal offensive rebounding will be. No team in the country has struggled on the glass more than Wyoming, and they won’t have an easy time against a tenacious Boise State club.

GAME PREDICTION

BOISE STATE 72, WYOMING 60

The Broncos should win this one going away, but if their hot shooters head into an early hibernation, they could find themselves in trouble. Alston, Jessup, and Maldonado could all put up video game numbers in this one, but with the way Wyoming plays, don’t expect the score to climb into the 80s.

Regardless of the final margin, Boise State should be moving to 2-1 in league play, while the Cowboys slip to 0-3.

Lonzo Ball attributes recent success to finally being back to full health

After a career-best game against Houston, Lonzo Ball credited his success to finally reaching full health on the season.

One of the few consistencies in Lonzo Ball’s time in the NBA has been injuries. Each season of his career, Ball has missed significant time during the season and each of his seasons was prematurely ended.

This season has been no different for Ball. After missing the near entirety of the summer with an ankle injury, he returned to the court only to miss another chunk of time with a groin injury.

With that injury behind him, though, Ball has hit the ground running in his return to the rotation, culminating in his triple-double on Sunday against the Houston Rockets. After the game, Ball credited his strong play to finally returning to full health.

“I’m just getting my legs back. I’ve been out for pretty much nine months before I got here, so I’m just trying to do what I can do to help my team out, and the defense is picking up as well.”

While getting his legs back under him is certainly a big factor in his play, his improved shot form has to be equally noted. Ball is hitting three-pointers at a career-best rate of 36.1%. That mark, that, is much lower than he’s shot in recent weeks as he’s shooting 42% from beyond the arc in the last eight games.

The key for Ball now not only for this season but for the rest of his career is to remain healthy. Any time he’s gotten momentum like this on the court in previous years, he’s gone down with a long-term injury shortly after. This season, he’s found a role in the starting lineup for a team that is surging after a long losing streak. If he can remain healthy, he can finally put together a breakout season.

UGA Wire reveals its number five game on the list of Georgia football wins this decade

In honor of the start of 2020 Wednesday, we decided to put together a list of the Top 10 Georgia football wins from the past decade.

We know you’ve been anticipating our Top 5 so let’s get this thing going. Coming in at No. 5 on the list is actually a duo of games which we will rank under one category, the Notre Dame series.

The Bulldogs traveled up to South Bend in 2017 for a 20-19 victory over the Irish, which helped spark the Jake From era in Athens and a season that saw wins over every rival and the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners in Pasadena.

Here’s some highlights from the game that really kicked off the Fromm and Smart era in the Classic City.

Now, let’s talk about the 2019 edition of this historic series. Though the sequel didn’t end in as much optimism as Bulldog fans had hoped, the hype around the game in Athens was like no other. College Gameday came to town, CBS broadcast the game and Sanford Stadium showed off brand-new LED lights.

The atmosphere in Athens on September 21st was unmatched and for those lucky enough to attend, it’s a game you’ll never forget.

Here’s a glance at some of those highlights:

Wow, what a day!

Warriors drop ball on New Year’s Eve, falling 117-113 in San Antonio

The Warriors close out the decade with an overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs, 117-113.

Even with the magic of a new year on the horizon, the AT&T Center is a house of horrors for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have struggled to find wins in San Antonio, only winning three games in 31 attempts since the opening of the AT&T Center in 2002. With three key players hitting the injury report before tip-off, things weren’t any easier.

D’Angelo Russell (shoulder), Willie Cauley-Stein (illness) and Kevon Looney (abdominal soreness) all didn’t suit up for San Antonio putting the Warriors at a disadvantage from the start.

Even with a shorthanded rotation, Steve Kerr’s squad battled the Spurs down to the win in their last game of the decade, falling in overtime 117-113.

The Warriors took a two-point advantage into halftime, but Patty Mills and LaMarcus Aldridge didn’t go down easy. The Spurs lead going into the final period. However, a valiant effort from rookie Alen Smailagic, Damion Lee and Alec Burks forced the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Warriors’ light rotation started to catch up with them, as they had no answer for San Antonio backcourt of Mills, Dejounte Murray and Bryn Forbes.

Countdown to GR3

After bouncing around the NBA in his young career, Robinson III looks like he’s found a home in Golden State. Robinson continued his career season during the Warriors’ New Year’s Eve date with the Spurs, adding 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field.

Without Russell, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Robinson turned into Golden State’s lead scoring option in San Antonio. The Michigan Wolverine product gave the Warriors a chance to steal a game in San Antonio with his play in the first half. Robinson paced the Warriors in the first half, scoring 18 of his points early.

Lee closes out 2019 making a case for a full-time roster spot

Two-way contract guard is putting in the Warriors in a tough place with his hot play of late. Lee’s solidified himself as the Warriors shooting guard to start 2020, but only has limited time left on his 45-day, two-way contract.

Lee is doing everything he can to make a case for him to stick around with the big club for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, with his game in San Antonio being the perfect example.

Lee tallied 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, adding seven rebounds and two assists. Lee played solid defense down the stretch while hitting a few clutch shots in the fourth quarter, including a three as the play clock expired.

Alec Burks leads Warriors into 2020

Similar to Robinson III, swingman, Burks stepped up with Russell out and got buckets. Burks carried the Warriors down the stretch, nailing several big shots to add to his game high-28 points. The Colorado product was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting four of five shots from long range.

Burks’ stellar play of late could force the Warriors to make a tough decision with the veteran. To start 2020, trading Burks now, or keeping him as a piece for when Curry and Thompson’s return will be a question the Warriors’ front office will have to answer.

Alamo Bowl: 3rd Quarter Recap

The third quarter recap from the Alamo Bowl involving the Texas Longhorns and the 11th ranked Utah Utes.

The Utah Utes started the second half running the ball and driving against the Texas defense. As they neared midfield the Texas defense were able to tighten up and forced a 4th and one. When quarterback Tyler Huntley kept the ball on a zone read, Joseph Ossai stops him in the backfield for a turnover on downs.

Once Texas got the offense back on the field, they got running back Keaontay Ingram involved in the offense. He received two Sam Ehlinger passes for big plays including a 11-yard completion to give Texas the 17-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Following the scoring drive, the Utes were able to get into the Longhorns’ territory following a facemask penalty from Ossai. Zack Moss, the Pac 12 co-offensive player of the year was able to get a big run on 3rd and two to extend their drive getting their deepest penetration into Texas territory on the night. Two big stops from defensive back Caden Sterns forces a Utah field goal to cut the lead to 14 points.

On the second drive of the third quarter, Texas found themselves behind the chains after a holding call on first down against Brennan Eagles. They were able to get a first down on a read option that quarterback Sam Ehlinger took for a big gain into Utah territory. A unnecessary roughness call put the Longhorns inside the red zone as the drive continued. Ehlinger did the rest on a six-yard run that appeared to be a broken play resulting in another Texas touchdown.

Third Quarter Stats

Sam Ehlinger 10/15 149 yards, 10 carries 68 yards Three TDs

Keaontay Ingram 10 carries 49 yards, two receptions 26 yards TD
